Union and BGF Remain at Odds Over Proposed Working-Condition Improvements
Labor Minister Kim Young-hoon will travel to Jinju to personally mediate talks between the Cargo Solidarity union and BGF, which have been stalled since a union member’s death. According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor, Minister Kim plans to visit the ministry’s Jinju branch at 8 p.m. on the 28th for the fourth round of negotiations between Cargo Solidarity and BGF Logis, the logistics subsidiary of BGF Retail.
On the 22nd, two days after the union member’s death, Cargo Solidarity and BGF Logis held their first face-to-face meeting to open a channel of dialogue. They have been negotiating Cargo Solidarity’s demands for improved working conditions for cargo workers at the CU logistics center.
The two sides have met three times, including an overnight session that stretched 16 hours between the 26th and 27th, but aside from a few clauses they failed to close the gaps between them.
With little progress in talks, Minister Kim stepped in to mediate and decided to visit the Jinju office himself. He had also played an active role on the 22nd in opening communication between the parties.
The confrontation was triggered on the morning of the 20th at about 10:32 a.m. during a Cargo Solidarity rally in front of the Jinju CU logistics center, when a truck driven by a nonunion driver struck union members, killing one person and injuring two others.
