South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, in a phone call, agreed on the need for bilateral cooperation to ensure free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to South Korea’s Foreign Ministry, Cho spoke with Motegi for about 20 minutes beginning around 5:30 p.m. on the 2nd. The two discussed South Korea–Japan relations and recent developments in the Middle East.

The ministers concurred that peace in the Middle East and the free, secure passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz are vital to both countries’ security and economic interests. They pledged to maintain close communication and cooperation on these matters.

They also described the Korea–Japan summit held in Nara last January as successful. Building on strong trust between their leaders, they agreed to continue active shuttle diplomacy to further develop a stable, forward-looking bilateral relationship.
