Iran vs. US: How a Single Night Could Change Global Energy Supply Forever
Daniel Kim | 2026.04.07
On the 7th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum on the deadline for talks with Iran, warning, "Tonight an entire civilization could disappear."
Iran responded that if U.S. forces cross its 'red lines,' it will cut off global energy supplies, pushing tensions in the Middle East to the brink of crisis.
That day, Trump turned up the pressure on his social platform Truth Social, posting, "Tonight you will witness one of the most important moments in world history."
He added, "I don't want that to happen, but it probably will," signaling the possibility of a scorched-earth response if talks collapse.
Earlier, the Trump administration set 8 p.m. Eastern on the 7th as a deadline for a deal that would, among other measures, fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
It warned that if negotiations fail, it would destroy Iran's critical infrastructure, such as power plants and bridges.
At the same time, Trump left open the remote possibility of a dramatic settlement under a new negotiating party, saying, "A full regime change is taking place, so something revolutionarily surprising could happen."
Iran immediately pushed back. According to Al Jazeera, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned it would expand its strike range beyond the region if the U.S. violated its red lines by attacking civilian facilities.
It specifically threatened measures to prevent the U.S. and its allies from receiving oil and gas for years, effectively signaling it would weaponize energy supplies.
Fighting has already been reported. Foreign outlets say an airstrike hit a railway bridge in Iran's Kashan region, killing 2 people.
That strike reportedly came shortly after Israel issued an evacuation deadline for civilians on sections of Iran's rail network.
The U.S. and Iran are exchanging ceasefire proposals through intermediaries, but significant gaps remain.
Trump described Iran's response as meaningful but "not good enough," signaling continued dissatisfaction.
