On May 6, the People Power Party moved to check Han Byung-do, the Democratic Party’s floor leader who won re-election, warning, “We will not allow parliamentary dictatorship.” The statement followed signals from the Democratic Party that it might sweep the standing committee chairmanships during the second-half organization, triggering a party confrontation. After a closed meeting of its lawmakers, People Power floor leader Song Eon-seok offered only a brief, “I congratulate him,” when asked about Han’s re-election. He sighed when reporters asked whether he expected negotiations over committee formation to go smoothly. He also mocked the ruling party’s plan to pursue a post-election “special prosecutor for fabricated indictments,” saying, “Isn’t that their usual playbook?”
Deputy Floor Leader Yoo Sang-bum criticized the ruling party’s potential sweep of committee chairs, arguing that “allocating committee posts based on seat count was a measure adopted by former President Kim Dae-jung—whom the ruling party venerates—to protect parliamentary democracy,” and warned, “If they monopolize these posts, they will be declaring majority-party dictatorship to the world.”
In a written statement, chief spokesperson Kwak Gyu-taek congratulated Han on his re-election but added, “The path the Democratic Party is taking now does not reflect the responsibilities of a major party toward citizens’ livelihoods; it is a shield for a specific individual. Show responsible politics that defends the boundaries of democracy.”
