As the People Power Party's nomination committee prepared to reopen candidate recruitment for a special mayoral contest covering Gwangju and Jeonnam (South Jeolla Province), former committee chair Lee Jung-hyun formally declared his candidacy.
After its April 5 meeting, the committee voted to reopen applications for the Gwangju–Jeonnam mayoral race and said it will cut the screening fee for additional applicants to metropolitan and local executive posts in the Honam (Southwest Korea) region by 80%.
Lee announced his bid on social media, saying, \"When everyone else gives up, I want to at least keep struggling.\"
The committee also said it will consider reopening candidate recruitment for the People Power Party's Gyeonggi gubernatorial nomination, which has struggled to attract contenders.
