A fire aboard a South Korean merchant ship in the Strait of Hormuz on May 4 was caused by a strike from an unidentified aerial object, investigators concluded.

On May 10, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry released the findings of a joint government investigation that reached that determination.

The ministry said the probe confirmed an unidentified aerial object struck the stern of the HMM-operated vessel Namu on May 4. Officials noted limits in the available evidence have so far prevented identification of the object’s exact type or dimensions, and investigators plan further analysis of debris recovered from the scene.

The Namu had completed cargo deliveries to Saudi Arabia and became trapped in the Strait of Hormuz after hostilities broke out in the region. At about 8:40 p.m. on May 4, an explosion and fire occurred aboard the vessel. Twenty-four crewmembers were on board, including six South Korean nationals; no injuries were reported.
