Seoul’s Jungnang District announced on May 12 that it has finished constructing a jokgu court at the Sinnae Vehicle Depot and completed upgrades to several other sports facilities, holding a completion ceremony on the 9th.

The initiative aimed to expand year-round community sports spaces and improve conditions for users, ensuring facilities remain accessible regardless of the weather.

Roughly one-third of Jungnang’s jokgu courts are located along riverbanks, making them difficult to use during the monsoon season. To address that, the district worked with Seoul Metro to secure idle land inside the Sinnae Vehicle Depot (Sinnae-dong 19) and built two regulation-size jokgu courts.

Construction began in March and was recently completed. The district plans to open the new courts to all residents.

The soccer and baseball fields at the Sinnae Vehicle Depot were also renovated. These community sports venues serve about 30,000 users annually; upgrades included remodeled locker rooms, showers, restrooms and a baseball scorekeeping room, and spectator seating was expanded from 64 to 120 seats.

Jungnang District is continuing a broader program of public sports-facility improvements. Last year the district invested about 1 billion KRW (approximately $750,000) to complete nine renovation projects, including upgrades to the Myeonmok 2-dong gym, replacement of the community sports center’s power-distribution panels, and the creation of rest areas at the Jungnang municipal tennis courts.

Work has continued into this year. In January the district remodeled showers and locker rooms at multipurpose gyms in Sinnae-dong and Muk-dong, and in April it completed repairs to the artificial turf at the soccer field in Yongma Falls Park.

In the second half of the year, Jungnang plans to renovate the climbing wall at Yongma Falls Park to meet international competition standards. The district says the upgrades are intended to create facilities that serve both local residents and professional athletes.

A district official said, “These improvements were carried out so residents can enjoy community sports in a safer, more comfortable environment. We will continue to expand the community sports infrastructure and strengthen facility management so everyone can enjoy better health and vitality in their daily lives.”
