Soprano Kang Tae-eun will return home for a recital on May 6 at Kumho Art Hall at Yonsei University in Seoul. She will perform works by George Frideric Handel, Richard Strauss, Vincenzo Bellini, Amy Beach, George Gershwin, and William Bolcom.
A graduate of Ewha Womans University and the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University, Kang’s repertoire spans both opera and art song. She pairs rigorous academic training with stage experience in South Korea and the United States.
Her operatic roles include Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi and Antonia in The Tales of Hoffmann. She has also appeared in Hansel and Gretel, Faust, Don Pasquale, and Don Giovanni, and has performed in concert halls across Maryland and Washington, D.C., as well as in summer opera programs in Italy and Chicago.
The program, titled Spectrum, opens with Handel’s “O, had I Jubal’s lyre” from Joshua and “Lascia ch’io pianga” from Rinaldo, showcasing Baroque phrasing and controlled, expressive restraint.
She then presents selections from Strauss’s Mädchenblumen, along with “Das Rosenband” and “Morgen!”, emphasizing tonal subtlety and the poetic lyricism of the German Lied tradition.
Bellini’s “Eccomi in lieta vesta… Oh! quante volte” from I Capuleti e i Montecchi closes the first half, highlighting bel canto line and sustained legato phrasing.
The second half shifts to American repertoire, including Amy Beach’s Three Browning Songs, Gershwin’s “The Man I Love,” and selections from William Bolcom’s Cabaret Songs. These works introduce rhythmic flexibility and theatrical character, broadening the program’s stylistic range.
Pianist Kim Ga-ram and double bassist Lee Si-hyun will join Kang, underscoring the program’s contrasts in style, language, and vocal color.
