The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Military Headquarters said on March 28 (local time), “This morning Iran targeted a U.S. support ship,” adding the vessel was “located a considerable distance from the Port of Salalah in Oman.”
Salalah, in southern Oman, sits on the Arabian Sea and is roughly 1,100 km (about 684 miles) from Iran’s southern coast along the Gulf. Iran did not provide precise coordinates. If the claim is confirmed, it would represent the farthest U.S. asset Tehran has struck in a long-range attack since the hostilities began.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also said it launched a large-scale assault the previous day against U.S. landing craft (LCUs) in the Gulf. In a statement, the IRGC said its naval forces conducted “Operation HYBE Lead,” targeting “U.S. and Israeli terrorist elements” at Kuwait’s Al Shuyukh port and along the UAE’s Dubai coast and ports.
The IRGC said it employed Qader-380 cruise missiles in the operation and claimed that “three of the six vessels sank and the rest caught fire,” according to the group.
