Analysts say Iran, now at war with the United States, struck at least 228 military assets inside U.S. bases across the Middle East. The Washington Post reported on June 6 (local time) that it verified satellite imagery from Feb. 28 through April 14 to reach that figure — a toll far larger than official U.S. counts or previous media reports. WP’s analysis found damage at 15 U.S. bases in the region. It identified 217 damaged or destroyed structures, including troop barracks, hangars and warehouse buildings, plus 11 other items such as satellite-communications antennas, Patriot missile equipment, power-generation facilities and fuel storage tanks. Experts who reviewed the imagery said the pattern of hits suggests U.S. forces underestimated Iran’s strike capabilities, did not fully adapt to modern drone warfare and left some bases exposed. Mark Cancian, senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the attacks were precise. Analysts did not see the random blast craters that would indicate widespread misses. Critics also argue U.S. forces failed to adequately counter Iran’s suicide drones. Decker Ibless, a research analyst at the Navy Analysis Center, noted the drones carried relatively small warheads and caused limited structural damage, but were harder to intercept and far more accurate — making them a larger threat to U.S. forces. Maximilian Bremer, a nonresident fellow at the Stimson Center, said the battlefield has shifted from a “stealth” era to one that is increasingly transparent. He added that U.S. forces appear poised to strike while primarily adopting a defensive posture around bases. Some experts cautioned that Iran’s attacks did not necessarily cripple U.S. strike options. They suggested some of the damage could reflect deliberate U.S. deception — allowing less-critical assets to take hits to conserve interceptor missiles for incoming Iranian missiles and drones.
