On the afternoon of the 7th, LG Arts Center hosted a production press conference for Uncle Vanya. The event was attended by LG Arts Center Director Lee Hyun-jung, director Son Sang-kyu, and actors Lee Seo-jin, Go Ah-sung, Yang Jong-wook, Lee Hwa-jung and Kim Soo-hyun, who spoke about the new staging.
Uncle Vanya is a contemporary reimagining of Anton Chekhov's classic. The production will feature a tightly knit ensemble, presented with a single cast performing every show.
Lee Seo-jin had previously said he agreed to join after recommendations from those around him and after seeing the director's determined look. He elaborated on his decision to take the role.
Lee said, \"At first, of course, I refused. But I met with director Son Sang-kyu and listened to his vision. I felt I was too old to decide on my own, so I usually take the advice of younger people and those close to me. After discussing it and seeing how passionate the staff were, I decided to sign on.\"
He added, \"I do regret it (laughs). It's been exhausting. I half-joke that this might be my last project,\" drawing laughter from the audience.
This production also marks Go Ah-sung's first stage play since her debut. Asked why she joined, Go said she has always admired theater and stage actors. \"I watched director Son's production The Life of Others here and was deeply moved. When I was offered this role, I wanted to do it. Lee Seo-jin had already been cast; I thought, if not now, when would I get the chance to play his niece?\" she explained.
She continued, \"Although he says he regrets it, I didn't realize he was so sweet. This is my first time meeting him on a project like this, and we're working hard alongside the rest of the cast and crew.\"
Meanwhile, Uncle Vanya runs from May 7 through May 31 at LG Arts Center Seoul, in the LG SIGNATURE Hall.
