[MyDaily = Reporter Kim Ha-young] Hyoyeon, a member of Girls' Generation, has been chosen as the main vocalist for the new unit Hyori-su.
The first episode of the \"Hyori-su Debut Project,\" released May 2 on the YouTube channel \"Hyo's Level Up,\" shows the members locked in a fierce competition for the main vocal role.
In the video, Hyoyeon joked that the project has grown so big broadcasters even covered it. \"I'm going to be the main vocalist,\" she said. \"I love all this attention,\" she added, displaying confidence and raising expectations.
Hyoyeon then launched an in-person campaign, appealing to voters: \"I'm Hyoyeon. I'm taking on the main vocal role for the first time in 20 years—please vote for me.\" Sooyoung quipped, \"With my wide range, I'll even throw in my overtime pay,\" while Yuri, relaxed, added, \"I only need to be the center.\"
The vote produced several twists. Sooyoung led the online polls (likes and views), but the offline vote—weighted at 80%—decided the result. Hyoyeon won two of the three offline votes and was declared the main vocalist. In her acceptance remarks she vowed, \"I'll work hard so I don't let Hyori-su down.\"
At a meeting that followed, Hyoyeon outlined her ambitions as main vocalist. Jokingly she said, \"Now that I'm the main vocalist, the Grammy's basically in the bag—pack your passports,\" drawing laughter. During concept talks, she said she wants the trio's vocals to have the depth of acts like SeeYa and SG Wannabe, and she mentioned Kenji, Park Jin-young, and Teddy as producer candidates.
On the concept direction, Yuri argued, \"YG is all we need — we should break away from SM,\" a line Sooyoung echoed, saying, \"I have YG DNA.\" Yuri added confidently, \"If we'd gone to YG, we would have beaten TaeTiSeo (Taeyeon, Tiffany, Seohyun).\"
Meanwhile, the unit Hyori-su—made up of Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Sooyoung—is slated to appear on tvN's variety show You Quiz on the Block, a booking that has fans excited.
