Hygiene and nutrition management disclosed for 15 meal sites
Jungnang District in Seoul announced on May 3 that it will roll out policies to improve everyday food environments and tighten meal-safety oversight to help children develop healthy eating habits.
Jungnang will first establish the Our Kids’ Health Zone in places children frequent to make healthier choices easier.
The Our Kids’ Health Zone targets convenience stores and grocery outlets within school safety zones. The program places nutritious items such as milk, soy milk, and eggs at children’s eye level and designates participating areas with clear signage. By arranging products to match children’s sightlines and movement patterns, the district aims to nudge healthier choices in daily life.
Jungnang is deploying dedicated monitors for child-targeted foods to visit about 100 convenience stores and similar outlets within school zones to recruit participants. The district will support participating retailers by helping prioritize healthy-food displays and installing informational signage.
The district will also operate a Parents’ Observation Program to strengthen the safety and credibility of child meal services. The Jungnang Child and Social Welfare Meal Management Support Center will run the program from May through June for 15 child meal sites and 105 parents, sharing guidance on hygiene, safety, and nutrition management and giving parents a chance to observe nutrition-education sessions firsthand.
In particular, the “I Like Cucumbers!” nutrition session will use sensory activities and play with cucumbers to help children become familiar with ingredients.
Jungnang expects the program to promote communication among the support center, childcare facilities, and parents, fostering a safer, more trusted meal environment.
Jungnang District Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi said, “Children’s eating habits are formed when everyday environments and education work together. We will continue improving everyday food environments and managing meal safety so children have a solid foundation to grow up healthy.”
