[Herald Economy (Daegu)=Reporter Kim Byung-jin] Yoon Jae-ok, a four-term lawmaker from the People Power Party representing Daegu Dalseo-eul, opened a pre-primary campaign office in the Samsung Life building at the Banwoldang intersection in Jung-gu, Daegu, formally launching his bid for the party's mayoral nomination.

On the 5th, Yoon’s campaign mounted a large banner on the building’s exterior reading "Risk-free, decisive execution" and "All in for Daegu," signaling a firm commitment to the upcoming mayoral primary.

Local political observers have focused on Yoon’s choice of Banwoldang.

The office site occupies the gathering place where students assembled during the Feb. 28, 1960, democracy movement to resist authoritarian rule.

A plaque marking the "Feb. 28 Democracy Movement gathering site" stands directly in front of the building. Observers interpret the move as an attempt to use the location’s historical significance to convey his determination to navigate Daegu through its current challenges.

Banwoldang also once housed Daegu’s first department store, the Banwoldang Store, which was built with Korean capital during the Japanese colonial period.

Choosing a site tied to national-capital pride follows Yoon’s January campaign launch in front of the recently closed Daegu Department Store and reinforces his pledge to revive the struggling downtown economy.

Banwoldang is a transit hub where subway Lines 1 and 2 intersect, drawing residents from across Daegu.

"With the opening of this office, I will strengthen on-the-ground communication and, relying on proven negotiating skills and execution, secure an advantage in the primary," Yoon said.
