On April 8, Lee Jae-jun, mayor of Suwon Special City, held a press conference at Hwaseong Haenggung and formally announced his bid to run for mayor in the ninth term under direct popular election.
\"Over the past four years, we have laid the groundwork for Suwon's transformation. Now it is time to turn those achievements into completion and to take a new leap forward,\" he said. He made clear his intention to seek re-election, adding, \"I will take full responsibility for and complete Suwon's great transformation.\"
He cited a 93.7% fulfillment rate for campaign pledges during his eighth term, arguing that major projects are producing visible results. He highlighted achievements such as confirming a new Guwon Station on the Shinbundang Line, advancing plans for a Suwon R&D Science Park, relaxing building height restrictions around Hwaseong Fortress, and designating the film district as an Urban Regeneration Innovation Zone.
Looking ahead, he said his administration will prioritize restoring the local economy and strengthening the city's competitiveness. He outlined plans to position Suwon as a center for advanced scientific research and a global tourist destination, while continuing hands-on, citizen-focused municipal services residents can feel in their daily lives.
\"Only someone who has carried responsibility through to the end can speak of advancing and completing what was begun over the past four years,\" he said. \"The person who planted the seeds is the one who will see them bear fruit.\"
Choosing Hwaseong Haenggung as the venue highlighted Suwon's historical significance and symbolism and underscored a vision of a city where tradition and the future coexist.
\"We resolved tasks many thought impossible through administrative persistence and decisive action,\" he said. \"With proven competence, I will lead Suwon to greater progress.\"
