On the 10th, Dong-gu in Incheon delivered a petition to the Supreme Court’s Court Administration Office urging that the Maritime International Commercial Court (maritime court) be located in the Jemulpo District.

About 28,303 people—roughly half of Dong-gu’s population—signed the petition.

Officials say the maritime court should be sited in Jemulpo, which will be established in July when Dong-gu and inland areas of Jung-gu merge, arguing the move would help revitalize the historic downtown and preserve the area’s port-opening heritage.

Dong-gu Mayor Kim Chan-jin said the petition “reflects residents’ strong aspirations” and expressed hope that the Court Administration Office will “make a judicious decision so Jemulpo can become the center of maritime justice in South Korea.”

The proposed Incheon maritime court would have jurisdiction over the Seoul metropolitan area, Gangwon, and the Chungcheong regions; the Court Administration Office will select its location.

Alongside Dong-gu, Yeonsu-gu, Michuhol-gu and the Yeongjongdo area are also competing to host the maritime court.
