President Lee Jae-myung criticized a joint safety inspection by government agencies that was meant to verify the re-examination of illegally occupied facilities along rivers and in valleys, saying that missing sites after being given two chances to inspect would be a serious problem.

On the 6th, he shared a post from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on X (formerly Twitter) and commented on the matter.

He said, "We must conduct thorough oversight to dispel the public's distrust of the officials responsible. If, despite being given two opportunities, officials failed to properly detect and enforce violations, we will hold those public servants strictly accountable for dereliction of duty, as previously warned."

Earlier at the Cabinet meeting, when Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Ho-joong reported that illegal facilities in rivers and valleys exceeded 33,000, the president said the finding was a matter of public trust in governance.

"If they think they can let it slide again and just get by, people will criticize them behind their backs," he warned, adding that such negligence must never be tolerated.

He added, "When we asked them to report illegal valley businesses, they provided a token tally — 880 — as if for show. But when we did a proper count, there were 33,000. From now on, focus inspections on which public officials allowed this to be neglected, and, if necessary, investigate all of them for dereliction of duty," he emphasized.
