Hyun Geun-taek, the Democratic Party candidate for mayor of Yongin Special City, held the opening of his campaign office on the 9th and formally announced his bid.

In his declaration, Hyun said he is taking on the challenge of changing Yongin’s future with a profound sense of responsibility to its 1.1 million residents, and he officially launched his campaign.

Hyun emphasized his roughly 20 years practicing law in Yongin, representing residents on a wide range of legal issues, and highlighted his role in the Yongin light-rail residents’ lawsuit, which resulted in a damages award of 21.4 billion KRW (approximately 16.05 million USD). He said the case demonstrated how flawed administration can seriously harm citizens’ lives and that he now feels an urgent need to reform Yongin from city hall rather than in the courts.

Assessing Yongin as standing at a pivotal moment, Hyun laid out three core priorities: establishing a national semiconductor industrial park, expanding the regional transit network, and transforming Yongin into a self-sustaining city of 1.5 million. He stressed the need for decisive, coordinated execution aligned with the Lee Jae-myung administration and called for strong cooperation with the central government.

“Yongin must stop opposing the national government and become a city that builds the future together,” he said. “Through cooperation with the central government, Gyeonggi Province and the National Assembly, I will accelerate projects that have stalled.”

Among his principal pledges, Hyun prioritized the early realization of the national semiconductor park. “I will concentrate administrative resources to bring Samsung Electronics’ first fab online quickly during my term,” he said, pledging to resolve power and water supply issues and to expedite compensation for affected parties. He also proposed linking a satellite city and an economic free zone to attract global companies and talent and to establish Yongin as a semiconductor hub.

On transportation, Hyun promised a “Gangnam within 30 minutes” era by advancing projects such as the Yongin-Bundang express rail (YTX), the Southern Gyeonggi regional rail, and the Central-region express rail. He added that he would pursue commuter-focused improvements—adding regional buses, expanding GTX-connected shuttle services, and introducing a demand-responsive service called “Ttok Bus.”

Hyun also outlined life-course policies: boosting youth employment and housing support, strengthening care services, and expanding welfare for seniors, aiming to raise both economic growth and residents’ quality of life in Yongin.

“Politics should be judged by results, and administration must prove itself through performance,” he said. “I will be a mayor who keeps promises and remains accountable to the end.”

Attendees at the opening included Chu Mi-ae, candidate for Gyeonggi governor; Lee Eon-ju, senior supreme council member of the Democratic Party; Kim Seung-won, chair of the Gyeonggi Provincial Party; Yongin-area lawmakers Lee Sang-sik, Son Myung-soo and Bu Seung-chan; Democratic Party members of the National Assembly Jo Jung-sik, Baek Hye-ryun, Kim Young-jin, Kim Jun-hyuk, Yeom Tae-young, Hong Ki-won, Kim Ki-pyo, Min Byung-deok, Lee Jae-jung and Kim Hyun-jung; former Yongin mayor Baek Gun-gi; former Gyeonggi education superintendent Lee Jae-jung; supporters’ association chairman Kim Yong; Ahn Hong-taek, supporters’ association chair and former co-leader of the Yongin light-rail residents’ lawsuit group; and other Democratic Party figures.

Before the main program, a meet-and-greet with residents began at 3 p.m., during which hundreds queued to take commemorative photos with Hyun.
