[Anchor] We continue our coverage of the June 3 by-elections. The Democratic Party of Korea’s leadership visited Hanam, a key battleground in the Seoul metropolitan area, to underscore their commitment to defending the seat. The People Power Party says it will recruit high-profile candidates to try to reclaim it. Reporter Yoon Sol has the story. [Reporter] Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheong-rae visited Deokpung Traditional Market in Hanam. He campaigned with Gyeonggi gubernatorial candidate Choo Mi-ae and Lee Kwang-jae, whom the party strategically nominated for the Hanam Gap by-election, broadening their outreach to local residents. “We strategically nominated him for Hanam because his concentrated experience and know-how make him the right person to transform Hanam quickly and dramatically,” Jeong said. Hanam Gap is the district where Choo narrowly won the last general election by about 1,200 votes, so the Democratic Party regards it as a competitive and vulnerable district. Lee, preparing for his official campaign launch, urged voters to support the Lee Jae-myung administration. “What matters is whether we can reinvent ourselves and become a city of the future. Given my experience in the Blue House, as governor of Gangwon, and as a three-term lawmaker, I believe I can get the job done. I came here to work,” Lee said. Meanwhile, the People Power Party is working to find a strong challenger to Lee Kwang-jae. Names being discussed inside and outside the party include former lawmaker Lee Yong, Hanam party branch chair Lee Chang-geun, and calls to recruit former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min. “We are looking for a candidate who can win. I can’t name anyone specifically yet, but we are working to nominate a strong candidate to win the by-election,” Park Deok-heum, the party’s nomination committee chair, said. The People Power Party, which opened applications for candidates in nine by-election districts, plans to finalize its selections early next week. With the Democratic Party already mobilized and attempting to seize the initiative, all eyes are on what response the People Power Party will mount. This is Yoon Sol for Yonhap News TV.
