On the 24th, the Gyeonggi Provincial Council’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee said it reviewed the budget’s priorities and execution structure while examining the first supplemental budget for 2026.
Under the supplemental budget, Gyeonggi’s total budget rises to about 41.6813 trillion KRW (≈ US$31.261 billion), an increase over the original budget, and the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee’s allocation was modestly increased to 608.2 billion KRW (≈ US$456.15 million).
During its review, the committee also identified structural issues in fiscal management. While it praised efforts to secure national funding and attract competitive projects, it highlighted several areas for closer scrutiny: the appropriateness of using local bonds, potential overlaps between projects, and the need for consultation with municipal governments and related agencies.
Hwang Dae-ho, chair of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, said, “This supplemental budget is the minimum safeguard to protect residents’ access to culture amid a difficult economy and the starting point for restoring livelihoods. Cultural policy is not mere consumption but a public service directly tied to quality of life, and we will ensure it produces tangible results.”
He added that now is the time to strengthen cooperation between the central government and local governments to improve fiscal efficiency and raise the overall effectiveness of policy.
