[iNews24 Reporter Lee Yong-min] South Korea's Democratic Party revoked its nomination of A, a preliminary candidate for the Chungju City Council in North Chungcheong Province, following allegations that he embezzled apartment maintenance funds.
On May 5, the North Chungcheong provincial branch of the party said the party’s Supreme Council had met the previous day and voted to re-nominate the candidate for Chungju’s "Na" district.
Consequently, A’s nomination was voided and Lee Doo-won was re-nominated as the sole candidate for that district.
Originally, A had been listed in the 1-ga slot, while Lee Doo-won occupied the 1-na slot.
Police are reportedly investigating A on suspicion that, while serving as head of an apartment residents’ association from 2018 through earlier this year, he embezzled ₩129,000,000 (≈ US$96,750) from the long-term repair reserve fund. After the allegations surfaced, he is reported to have returned ₩100,000,000 (≈ US$75,000).
The party said it canceled the nomination after weighing the potential impact on the broader election.
