“I will put an end to the pattern of students leaving Busan as soon as they finish middle school.”

On the afternoon of the 7th, at a campaign office in Busanjin District, Choi Yun-hong addressed supporters, drawing sustained applause. Parents, education officials and backers packed the venue.

Shouts of “Save our schools” echoed throughout the room.

At the opening ceremony, Choi said that over the past 12 years Busan’s education has weakened both academically and in character. He vowed to change a system where students cannot go on field trips or play freely on school grounds, and pledged to build a Busan education system that removes the need to move to Seoul and reduces the burden of private tutoring.

He also addressed AI in education, saying, “In the AI era, a person's basic grounding is character,” and pledged to establish a character-education system that brings schools, families and communities together.

In his congratulatory remarks, Honorary Campaign Chair Jang Hyuk-pyo said, “Busan will thrive only when its education stands on firm ground,” stressing the need for a candidate with educational expertise, administrative experience and the drive to deliver results.

Supporters including fundraising committee chair Park Se-ho and advisers Jo Kwan-hong and Park Dae-hae also attended and publicly declared their backing.

Choi’s campaign estimated the crowd at roughly 500 people.
