Kwon Hyuk-woo, the Democratic Party’s pre-candidate for Suwon mayor in Gyeonggi Province, opened his campaign office on March 28, formally launching his bid for mayor.

Kwon’s campaign team said the opening ceremony took place that morning on the fifth floor of the Haeun Building in Ingye-dong, Paldal District, Suwon.

Lawmakers Kim Seung-won (Suwon Gap), Baek Hye-ryun (Eul), Kim Young-jin (Byeong), Kim Jun-hyeok (Jeong), and Yeom Tae-young (Independent) attended in person. Rep. Chu Mi-ae (Hanam Gap) and Cho Jung-sik, the president’s political affairs special adviser, sent congratulatory messages.

Kwon said he intends to be the first in the country—starting in Suwon—to put President Lee Jae-myung’s philosophy and the value of popular sovereignty into practice. He pledged to make citizens the true owners of municipal governance and to run an effective administration that produces tangible improvements in residents’ lives.

He called a one-on-one primary with the incumbent mayor a pivotal test that will decide whether Suwon remains stuck in the past or moves forward into the future. He vowed to use the strong support and energy shown at the event to win the primary and carry that momentum into a decisive victory in the general election to propel Suwon to greater progress.

On March 27, the Gyeonggi Provincial Democratic Party announced the results of the Public Office Candidate Recommendation Management Committee’s second-round screening to select candidates for heads of 19 local governments. The Suwon mayoral primary is expected to be a head-to-head contest between Kwon and incumbent Mayor Lee Jae-jun.
