2026 Gyeonggi Province Local Election: Key Candidates Revealed for 11 Cities

On the 12th, the Gyeonggi Provincial Chapter of the Democratic Party of Korea announced the results of its third primary to nominate candidates for heads of basic local governments across Gyeonggi Province ahead of the 9th local elections.

Of the 11 cities and counties included in the announcement, six nominees secured a majority and were confirmed; four races will proceed to runoff votes, and Namyangju will hold a four-way primary.

According to the party notice, Park Seung-won won the Gwangmyeong mayoral primary with a majority and secured the nomination. Park Eun-mi prevailed in Yangpyeong; Park Si-seon won in Yeoju; Hyun Geun-taek carried Yongin; Park Yun-guk won in Pocheon; and Jeong Myung-geun secured the nomination in Hwaseong — each by a majority.

Four contests will go to runoffs. In Gwangju, Kim Seok-gu and Park Gwan-yeol will face off in a two-person runoff; in Dongducheon, Park Tae-hee and Lee In-gyu will rematch. In Icheon, Seong Su-seok and Eom Tae-jun will advance to a runoff, and in Hanam, Kang Byung-deok and Seo Jeong-wan will compete in the final round.

Namyangju will stage a four-way primary featuring Kim Han-jung, Baek Ju-seon, Lee Won-ho, and Choi Hyun-deok. The notice states that if no candidate wins a majority, the top two vote-getters will advance to a runoff.

The primary was held from the 11th to the 12th. Objections to the announcement may be filed with the central party’s Election Candidate Recommendation Reconsideration Committee within 48 hours of the 9:10 p.m. announcement on the 12th.
