Art Center Incheon announced on April 22 that it will welcome pianists Seong-Jin Cho and Yunchan Lim in May, offering audiences a special spring season.
The programming is likely to spark strong interest among classical-music fans: it presents two of the world’s leading young artists—both central figures on the global classical stage—on the same venue, spaced just a week apart.
Pianist Seong-Jin Cho will appear on May 8 with the Munich Philharmonic under the baton of Lahav Shani.
Cho rose to international prominence after becoming the first Korean to win the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition. He has since partnered with top orchestras including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, establishing himself as one of today’s most singular pianistic talents.
On this program he will perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Munich Philharmonic led by incoming chief conductor Lahav Shani.
The notoriously demanding concerto requires dazzling technique and explosive energy, and Cho is expected to demonstrate his formidable virtuosity.
The Munich Philharmonic will also offer the essence of the German orchestral tradition with Beethoven’s "Egmont" Overture and Brahms’s Symphony No. 1.
Then, on May 13, Yunchan Lim—who caused a global sensation as the youngest-ever winner of the 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition—will present a recital.
Following a record-setting run that included two wins at the 2024 Gramophone Music Awards, Lim has chosen works by Schubert and Scriabin for this program.
He will play Schubert’s Piano Sonata No. 17, the "Gasteiner," in the first half, and Scriabin’s Sonatas Nos. 2–4 in the second.
Lim’s characteristic precision and his poetic expressive range at the keyboard promise a concentrated, unforgettable experience for listeners.
An Art Center Incheon official said, "It is thrilling simply to be able to feel the breath of two artists who define our era in the same space, separated by only a short interval."
