On the 23rd, Lee wrote on social media, \"Would a 10-year ARMY criticize the team she supports?\" She added, \"In this country, can't a celebrity's family enjoy being a fan in peace?\"
The controversy began after Lee shared video of BTS’s comeback show at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on the 21st and captioned it, \"A leader who speaks English and kids who still can't speak English after 10 years. Still, I love them all.\" Some fans interpreted the comment as targeting and belittling specific members and raised objections.
Lee said she shared the clip after laughing at a playful exchange the members had during a Weverse live broadcast, and argued there was no reason to criticize a group that returned with what she called a \"perfect\" album after 3 years and 9 months. She also addressed her own English, saying, \"I'm not someone who speaks English well, nor am I in a position to judge others' abilities.\"
She described herself as a private citizen long removed from the public eye and protested, \"Am I, one of 8.48 billion people, not even allowed to enjoy being a fan?\"
Lee is the mother of Choi Jun-hyuk, CEO of Alpha Asset Management and the husband of Jeon Ji-hyun. She is also the daughter of the late designer Lee Young-hee, who helped globalize the hanbok.
