Volvo Weighs Production Increase

Volvo’s new electric SUV, the EX60, logged stronger-than-expected order volumes immediately after its debut, signaling early market momentum.

Unveiled at the end of January, the EX60 secured orders well above Volvo’s internal projections within a month of sales opening.

As a result, Volvo is reportedly re-evaluating production plans at its Torslanda plant in Sweden.

Orders Spike Before Customer Production Begins

Notably, customer car production has not yet started. Series production is scheduled to begin on the assembly line starting next month.

Despite that, first-month orders for the EX60 exceeded those for the EX30. The smaller, lower-priced EX30 trailed the EX60 in order momentum.

Volvo has not disclosed exact production targets, but industry sources say the company is considering extending summer production runs to meet stronger-than-expected demand.

Built on an 800V EV Platform

The EX60 rides on Volvo’s newly developed 800V electric vehicle platform.

The architecture integrates the battery with the body, uses large structural body components, and incorporates an updated electronic systems architecture.

Key specs include:

  • Maximum driving range: about 640 km (400 miles)

  • Charge from 10% to 80% in about 20 minutes

  • Maximum charging power: 400 kW

At the top end, the P12 dual-motor model delivers roughly 671 hp and about 79 kg·m of torque (≈572 lb-ft).

Competitive Pricing Boosts Interest

Price competitiveness is another factor behind strong demand.

Volvo lists the European starting price at about €63,000 (approximately $67,410) (about 100 million KRW (approximately $75,000)), which places the EX60 roughly in line with the current XC60 PHEV.

Analysts say buyers are responding to high-performance EV characteristics and fast charging capability without a major price premium.

Industry observers expect competition among 800V-based electric SUVs — including the BMW iX3 and Mercedes‑Benz GLC EV — to intensify.
