Kia’s electrification centerpiece and entry-level compact electric SUV, the EV2, has entered production at a European assembly line.

Analysts say the move is more than a lineup expansion; it’s a strategic play to counter Europe’s tightening protectionist measures.

According to industry sources and automotive outlets, Kia has begun full-scale production of the B-segment EV2 at its plant in Žilina, Slovakia.

Production will start with the standard version fitted with a 42.2 kWh battery. A 61.0 kWh long-range variant and a GT-Line trim featuring a performance-oriented design package are scheduled to join the line in June.

The Žilina plant has long been a key outpost for growing Kia’s European market share. With EV2 now in production, the facility reinforces its role as Kia’s European electrification hub.

How local production unlocks subsidies and bypasses tariff barriers

The EV2’s launch has attracted attention because building the car in Europe gives Kia a meaningful price and competitive advantage.

The European Union has moved to tighten tariff rules and implement subsidy policies aimed at limiting imports of low-cost Chinese EVs and protecting domestic manufacturers.

Even competitively priced Korean EVs shipped from Korea would face steep tariffs and reduced subsidy eligibility if exported into the bloc.

By producing the EV2 in Slovakia, Kia avoids those tariff hurdles and becomes eligible for local green-vehicle incentives, creating a clear price advantage over rivals in the same segment.

Analysts say Kia’s decision to base production of a compact EV in Europe is a deliberate bet: win share in the toughest markets first by competing on price with a mass-market model.

Targeting Europe’s taste for compact cars — this could reshape mass-market EV adoption

Sitting at the smallest end of Kia’s EV lineup, the EV2 is optimized for city driving and tailored to European buyers who favor compact vehicles.

It will go head-to-head with established local rivals such as the Citroën e‑C3 and Peugeot e‑2008, but Kia hopes to disrupt the segment with strong efficiency figures and features like V2L (vehicle-to-load).

Observers argue that the broader shift to mass-market EVs will be decided not by expensive premium models but by affordable compact cars that mainstream buyers can actually afford.
