The event brought together Mayor Choi Dae-ho, Vice Mayor Lee Gye-sam, Han Ji-hyung, CEO of Autonomous A2G Co., Ltd., and Kim Myunghwa, president of the Anyang Honorary Citizens Association, among others, to test the new self-driving technology.
Participants rode a roughly 4 km (about 2.5 miles) route from Anyang City Hall through Beomgye Station to the Smart City Integrated Center; the trip took about 30 minutes.
The Level 4 autonomous shuttle seats nine and can reach a top speed of 40 km/h (about 25 mph). The vehicle is equipped with multiple sensors, communication-based autonomous driving systems and real-time monitoring technology.
This Level 4 shuttle is the first among municipal governments to operate without a driver’s seat. For safety, a single safety manager will ride on board to handle any emergencies.
The public trial route is part of the Smart City Integrated Center program and begins on the 16th. Any resident can reserve a free ride through Anyang’s integrated reservation website.

Anyang launched its autonomous public transportation service in April 2024. Since then, the city has built a comprehensive operational system covering service, facilities, regulation and safety, and earned the only top rating—Grade A—among basic local governments in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s evaluation of autonomous vehicle pilot zones.
The city also secured national funding for the Ministry’s "Autonomous Vehicle Pilot Zone Support Project" two years in a row, receiving 450 million KRW (about 337,500 USD).
Using those funds, Anyang plans to expand autonomous services in phases. The city will introduce a new driverless Level 4 shuttle running from Gwanak Station to Anyang Art Park, and starting in April it will extend an existing daytime route to reach the Pyeongchon Elproud Apartments to improve residents’ access to public transit.
