[The Public — Oh Doohwan, Reporter] As the electric-vehicle era advances, the role of the car is changing rapidly. Vehicles are no longer just transportation; they’re evolving into mobile spaces for living, work and leisure. Kia’s new electrified PBV, the PV5, is a direct manifestation of that shift.
On a recent test drive of the PV5 passenger model, it felt less like an electric van and more like a new, space-first mobility platform.
Kia built the PV5 on a new PBV-dedicated electric architecture, E-GMP-S (Electric Global Modular Platform for Service). It leverages the company’s E-GMP technology while prioritizing versatility. The layout delivers a flat floor, a spacious cabin and a body structure designed for multiple configurations.

Kia calls the vehicle a "Platform Beyond Vehicle" — a platform meant to support mobility services, logistics and leisure activities alike.
The PV5 passenger seats five in a 2-3-0 layout, aimed at families and mobility-service operators.
The exterior departs from traditional vans. It keeps a boxy silhouette but projects a futuristic aesthetic. The front is clean and simple, while the long wheelbase and tall ride height give the profile balanced, stable proportions. In the city, its distinctive look drew frequent glances.

Above all, the PV5’s standout strength is space.
The overall length is 4,695 mm — comparable to a compact SUV — but the wheelbase stretches to 2,995 mm. That translates to interior room approaching a full-size sedan. The EV platform’s flat floor also enhances the cabin’s openness.
Second-row space is generous: adults have ample legroom and headroom. The second-row seats recline and include a Fold & Dive function, allowing multiple configurations depending on needs.
The cargo area is notable as well. Standard capacity is 1,330 liters and expands to a maximum of 2,310 liters with the second row folded — plenty for camping gear or sports equipment.

Storage is well thought out, with compartments on the top of the crash pad, in door trims and under the first-row floor. The under-foot storage in the first row is particularly handy for shoes or small items.
The V2L (vehicle-to-load) function adds real utility. With the exterior V2L connector you can power devices while camping or during outdoor activities, reinforcing the PV5’s identity as a mobile living space rather than just a transport vehicle.
Driving performance was better than expected. The PV5 passenger pairs a 120 kW electric motor (about 161 hp) with 250 Nm (about 184 lb-ft) of torque and a 71.2 kWh battery. Kia rates the range at up to 358 km (about 223 miles) on a single charge.

On a 350 kW ultra-fast charger, the battery can go from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.
Boxy vehicles often carry a reputation for a rough ride, but the PV5 felt composed. With the battery mounted low, the center of gravity is reduced and body roll in corners is minimal.
The rear suspension uses a torsion beam, but a dual bump-stopper system smooths out the ride more than expected. The typical sway and instability associated with vans are largely absent.
Noise suppression is also impressive. Without an engine, and thanks to laminated acoustic glass up front and sound-absorbing pads, wind and road noise are well controlled and the cabin remains quiet.

The infotainment system stands out: a 12.9-inch display running Android Automotive OS (AAOS). It’s responsive, intuitive and supports an app market for additional applications.
Kia also offers the Pleos Fleet vehicle-management solution on the PV5, enabling logistics and mobility operators to monitor vehicle status in real time.
I tested the PV5 over two nights and three days, commuting between Gimpo and Yeouido in Seoul and taking a trip to Ganghwa Island.
The clearest impression was the sense of space. The PV5 will appeal to families traveling with children. It easily accommodated gear for kids attending soccer practice with room to spare.

The cabin height even lets elementary-aged kids stand and move around comfortably. Adults don’t feel cramped either.
Overall driving was comfortable. The smooth, linear acceleration typical of EVs and the composed ride reduce fatigue on longer trips.
Personally, I saw the PV5 as a credible alternative to a family minivan like the Carnival while doubling as a mobile workspace. For outdoor enthusiasts, it could be a smart, practical camper base.

The PV5 isn’t without compromises. Interior materials don’t feel ultra-premium, and the lack of a second-row armrest is a noticeable omission. But given that Kia designed the PV5 as a PBV prioritizing practicality and expandability over luxury, those trade-offs are understandable.

Overall, the PV5 represents a different kind of van. It pairs generous space and high utility with the quietness and efficiency of an EV.
Kia’s "Platform Beyond Vehicle" claim isn’t hyperbole. The PV5 is a new breed of electric vehicle that can serve as a family hauler, a camper base and a mobility-service workhorse all at once.
