Recent foreign reports indicate BYD is conducting an internal review of a potential Formula 1 entry. If the plan moves forward, the Chinese automaker would emerge as a new challenger to established teams such as Ferrari and McLaren.
As it stands for the 2026 season, F1 is set to include 11 teams. If BYD enters, it could either join as the 12th competitor or pursue an acquisition of an existing team.
Market speculation has centered on a possible takeover of Alpine, which Renault currently owns, but there has been no confirmation of formal negotiations.
F1 Rules Shifting Toward Greater Electrification

BYD's interest aligns with recent revisions to F1's power unit regulations. Formula 1 has run hybrid power units for more than a decade, and the 2026 regulations significantly increase the role of electric drive.
Under the new rules, the MGU‑K (motor generator unit — kinetic) output rises sharply from 120 kW to 350 kW — roughly a threefold increase. That change means approximately half of a car's peak power will come from electric propulsion.
The electric motor will operate alongside a 1.6‑liter turbocharged V6 internal‑combustion engine. With electrification taking on a central role, companies with expertise in EVs and battery systems find F1 participation increasingly attractive.
Potential Use of Yangwang (U9) Technology

Industry observers say BYD could leverage technology from its high-performance Yangwang brand if it joins F1.
Yangwang launched in January 2023 as BYD's premium performance marque. Its flagship U9 is a high-performance electric car built on BYD's e⁴ platform.
The U9 uses four independent electric motors and is rated at about 960 kW (roughly 1,287 hp). BYD says the car accelerates from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in approximately 2.3 seconds.
In its most extreme performance projections, BYD has even cited figures up to 3,000 horsepower, underscoring the company's emphasis on high‑power electrification technology.

China's automakers are increasingly active on the global motorsports stage, not just BYD.
Chery has been linked to potential entries in endurance events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while electric‑vehicle maker NIO has accrued more than a decade of experience in Formula E.
There is also speculation that BYD is considering an entry in the World Endurance Championship, suggesting Chinese manufacturers may reshape competitive dynamics across global motorsports.
Industry analysts say electrification has become a core competitive advantage, and EV manufacturers are increasingly using motorsports to demonstrate both technical capability and brand performance.
