Recent international reports indicate BYD is conducting an internal review of a potential Formula 1 entry. If the plan materializes, the Chinese EV giant would become a direct challenger to long-established teams such as Ferrari and McLaren.

For the 2026 season, F1’s grid is expected to feature a number of established and new entries. BYD could join as an additional (12th) team or enter by acquiring an existing outfit.

Market speculation has focused on a possible takeover of Alpine, currently owned by Renault, though no formal negotiations have been confirmed.

F1 Rule Changes Increase Electrification

BYD’s interest lines up with significant changes to F1 power unit regulations. Formula 1 has relied on hybrid power units for more than a decade, and the 2026 rules markedly increase the role of electric drive.

The MGU‑K (motor generator unit – kinetic) output is set to jump from 120 kW to 350 kW. That roughly triples the unit’s capacity and means the electric component will provide about half of a car’s total power.

The electric systems will work alongside a 1.6‑liter turbocharged V6 internal‑combustion engine. Given the heavier emphasis on electrification, companies with proven EV and battery expertise have stronger incentives to enter the sport.

Potential Use of Yangwang (U9) Technology

Industry analysts say BYD could leverage technology from its high‑performance Yangwang brand if it joins F1.

Launched in January 2023, Yangwang is BYD’s premium performance marque. Its flagship U9 is a high‑performance electric model built on the company’s e⁴ architecture.

The U9 uses four independent electric motors and produces about 960 kW (roughly 1,287 hp). BYD claims a 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) time of around 2.3 seconds.

In extreme configurations, Yangwang has discussed power outputs up to 3,000 hp, underscoring the brand’s focus on high‑performance electrification.

Chinese Brands Step Up Motorsports Involvement

BYD is not alone. Chinese automakers are increasingly pursuing global motorsports platforms.

Chery has been linked to potential entries in endurance races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while NIO has more than a decade of Formula E experience and established expertise in electric motorsport.

There are also reports that BYD has considered a World Endurance Championship (WEC) program, suggesting Chinese manufacturers could reshape parts of the international motorsports landscape.

“As electrification becomes a core competitive advantage, EV companies are using motorsports to showcase both technology and brand,” industry analysts say.
