On the 10th, Anyang City in Gyeonggi Province staged a preview run ahead of the official launch of South Korea’s first driverless Level 4 autonomous shuttle.
Mayor Choi Dae-ho, Vice Mayor Lee Gye-sam and Han Chi-hyung, CEO of Autonomous A2G Co., attended the event and experienced the autonomous technology firsthand.
Officials and guests covered a roughly 4 km (about 2.5 miles) route from Anyang City Hall to the Smart City Integration Center via Beomgye Station, completing the run in about 30 minutes. The shuttle has a top speed of 40 km/h (about 25 mph) and seats nine passengers.
Fitted with Level 4–grade sensors and a real-time monitoring system, the vehicle can operate without a human driver. By law, however, a safety attendant must remain on board at all times to respond to emergencies.
Since launching its autonomous public-transit service in April 2024, Anyang has developed a standout operating model and is the only local government to earn an A grade from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in its evaluations.
The city plans a substantial service expansion using 450,000,000 KRW (approximately 337,500 USD) in national funding it secured after winning the ministry’s grant competition for a second consecutive year.
As part of the rollout, Anyang will add Level 4 shuttles on the corridor between Gwanak Station and Anyang Art Park and, starting in April, extend the daytime route to the Pyeongchon Elfroud apartment complex to improve local transit access.
“As a leading autonomous-driving city, we will continue to pursue transportation innovation so advanced technology becomes part of everyday public transit,” Mayor Choi said.
The public trial route opens on the 16th. Residents can reserve a free ride through Anyang City’s integrated booking website.
