Kia said on the 10th that it has launched a mid-cycle refresh of its compact SUV, the "The New Niro." The model delivers roughly 20 km/L (about 47 mpg US) and marks Kia’s first update to the Niro in four years.

Introduced in March 2016, the Niro has sold 1.2 million units worldwide and remains Kia’s signature compact SUV. For this refresh, Kia added the latest safety and convenience features to the second-generation model that debuted in January 2022 to sharpen its market competitiveness.

The new Niro is powered by a 1.6-liter hybrid powertrain that produces a combined system output of 141 hp and 27.0 kgf·m of torque (about 195 lb-ft). Its combined fuel economy is rated at 20.2 km/L on 16-inch wheels (approximately 47.5 mpg US), the highest among domestic hybrid SUVs. That’s a small decline from the previous generation’s 20.8 km/L, largely due to an increase in curb weight.

Kia has introduced several focused technologies on the new Niro, including a smart regenerative braking system, a hybrid hierarchical predictive control system, and a Stay Mode. The regenerative system automatically adjusts recovery levels, while the hierarchical predictive control manages battery charge to help improve overall efficiency.

The company also retuned the front and rear suspension to improve ride comfort and increased the density of the dash sound-absorbing pad to reduce engine noise intrusion for better cabin quietness. Kia added two side airbags in the second row — bringing the total to 10 — and fitted pretensioners on all seat belts. Forward and rear collision-avoidance assist systems and a surround-view monitor further enhance driving safety.

The update also brings new in-vehicle services, including a Kia Connect Store where owners can purchase or subscribe to display themes and premium streaming services, along with a natural-language voice assistant called Kia AI Assistant.

Exterior styling follows Kia’s Opposites United design language. The Niro features Starmap Signature Lighting daytime running lights that emphasize horizontal and vertical lines, and a carefully sculpted front bumper and lower grille that give the front end a more planted, solid presence.

The new Niro measures 4,430 mm long, 1,825 mm wide and 1,545 mm tall, with a 2,720 mm wheelbase. It’s 10 mm longer than the previous model. A horizontal interior layout and the next-generation ccNC infotainment system enhance practicality and create a more open cabin feel.
