The Broadcasting, Media and Communications Committee will invest 72.7 billion KRW (about $54.5 million) through 2030 to develop AI-based broadcast-media innovation technologies.
This year the committee selected eight new projects aimed at automating production end to end and delivering personalized media services. The move is designed to accelerate efforts to strengthen the technological competitiveness of South Korea’s broadcast-media industry.
On the 30th, the Broadcasting, Media and Communications Committee announced the selection of eight new projects under this year’s Digital Media Innovation Technology Development Project (Innovation R&D).
The Innovation R&D program seeks to spur innovation in Korea’s broadcast-media sector and secure technological advantage amid changing viewing habits—such as the rise of over-the-top (OTT) services and personalized content—and intensifying competition from global companies.
Starting this year, the committee consolidated and retooled 14 previously small, fragmented R&D initiatives in the broadcast-media field. Over the next five years through 2030, it will invest a total of 72,767,000,000 KRW (about $54.58 million), positioning the program as the flagship R&D effort for the sector.
Kim Jong-chul, chair of the Broadcasting, Media and Communications Committee, said, "These new projects mark the starting point for AI- and data-driven innovation across broadcast-media production and distribution. We will work to improve production efficiency and create an environment where the public can enjoy personalized media services."
