Ganghwa Island rice is now heading to dining halls serving international students and staff.
On the 9th, Ganghwa County signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Incheon Global Campus Operations Foundation and the Korea Young Farmers' Association (Ganghwa County branch) to supply Ganghwa Island rice and collaborate on related initiatives.
The partners pledged to secure steady sales channels for Ganghwa Island rice and to provide healthy, high-quality ingredients to students and faculty at the Incheon Global Campus.
Under the MOU, the county will deliver 7t (about 7.7 short tons) of Ganghwa Island rice to campus cafeterias starting in July.
The rice will be introduced to students and staff at five international universities on the campus: SUNY Korea, SUNY FIT, George Mason University Korea, Ghent University Global Campus, and the University of Utah Asia Campus.
“I’m proud to supply Ganghwa Island rice to an educational setting that brings together talent from around the world,” Park Yong-cheol said. “This agreement will help showcase the quality of Korea’s premium rice to many countries.”
Since last year, Ganghwa County has been expanding sales channels to public institutions, private companies, and overseas markets to help ensure stable incomes for Ganghwa Island rice producers.
Last year, through partnerships with eight organizations, the county supplied an annual total of 152t (about 167.2 short tons). To date, it has built channels to supply 307t (about 338.4 short tons) per year across 13 organizations.
Grown on reclaimed soils rich in magnesium and nurtured by abundant sunlight and sea breezes, Ganghwa Island rice is renowned for its exceptional, delicious flavor.
