This move follows amendments to the Enforcement Rules of the Food Sanitation Act and supports the local rollout of the 'pet-friendly restaurant' program that went into effect on March 1. It’s intended to help the policy settle into neighborhoods and to foster a hygienic, safe dining environment where pets and people can dine together.
Daegu city and its nine districts are taking a hands-on approach to encourage restaurants to register as pet-friendly. Officials will distribute clear guidance to business owners and offer pre-opening consultations on facility standards and compliance to help ensure smooth, stable operations.
To ease the initial financial burden on operators, the city will provide practical supplies. Businesses that want to operate as pet-friendly restaurants will receive outdoor signs, interior notices, and handwritten vaccination logs for checking pets’ shots—items that fulfill legal requirements and lower the barrier to participation.
Daegu is also building partnerships with major food-industry organizations—the Daegu chapter of the Korea Restaurant Association, the Daegu chapter of the Korea Food Service Association, and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk chapter of the Korea Bakery Association—to include program details in voluntary outreach and hygiene training for their members.
Officials say expanding pet-friendly restaurants will broaden dining choices and greatly improve convenience for households with pets.
Currently, 61 pet-friendly restaurants are registered in Daegu. Residents can easily find nearby participating establishments through the Daegu city website and the Daegu food information platform \"DaeguFood\" (www.daegufood.go.kr).
No Gwon-yul, head of Daegu’s Hygiene Policy Division, said, “We’ve put systematic support in place to reduce operators’ initial burdens and boost customer satisfaction. We will continue to pursue policies so that a mature dining culture with pets can take root in the community.”
