[RealFood=Reporter Seong-yeon Yook] Collagen is having a moment as a beauty-from-within ingredient in the U.S., and food and beverage brands are cashing in.According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) export information (KATI), makers are moving beyond powdered supplements and into ready-to-drink options like carbonated waters. Collagen is quickly emerging as a new trend in the functional beverage market.
Nestlé-affiliated Vital Proteins recently launched a carbonated water containing collagen. It features Verisol collagen peptides and vitamin C, with no sugar or artificial sweeteners. Flavors include Strawberry Blossom, Lemon Lime, and Blood Orange (three flavors).
The launch taps into growing consumer interest in skin health and beauty-focused ingredients. Market-research firm SPINS found that 33% of shoppers choose supplements with skin, hair, and beauty benefits in mind. Innova Market Insights reports that collagen is the second-most used ingredient among new food and beverage products marketed with beauty concepts. In short, collagen is moving into the mainstream alongside staples like protein and dietary fiber.
Brands such as Monster Energy and Unwell Beverages have also rolled out collagen-infused drinks, stepping into the competition.
An aT official said, “Collagen no longer stays confined to supplements; it is quickly spreading into food-and-beverage categories like carbonated waters and ready-to-drink beverages. As consumer demand for skin health and wellness continues, we expect more collagen-led drink launches.”
