As large bookstores—once known as spots for \"beontta\" (collecting phone numbers)—have become harder to use for that purpose, a post suggesting Daiso as an alternative has ignited controversy.
A recent post on an online community carried the headline, \"Kyobo Bookstore beontta fell out of fashion long ago. These days it's Daiso beontta.\"
The poster, who claimed to know the beontta scene well, urged people to skip Kyobo and instead ask for the phone numbers of women browsing the Daiso cosmetics display. He offered a personal take: shopping for cosmetics at Daiso suggests someone is frugal and likely saving money.
He went on to argue that shopping for cosmetics shows someone knows how to present themselves, and insisted, \"Trust me—ask for the numbers of women by the Daiso cosmetics display.\"
Earlier, Kyobo Bookstore had been labeled a beontta hotspot, and social media filled with videos and posts titled things like \"Visited the hot beontta spot Kyobo Bookstore\" and \"An ordinary woman's Kyobo beontta experience.\"
But some customers said unwanted approaches and filming made them uncomfortable. One netizen recounted that when a man asked for her number, she said she had a boyfriend and declined; he then persistently followed her, and she fled the bookstore.
In response, Kyobo Bookstore posted a notice asking visitors to respect readers' focus and to be considerate so that precious reading moments aren't interrupted by unsolicited conversation or stares. The notice added that anyone feeling uncomfortable because of unexpected situations should not hesitate to contact nearby staff.
