A U.S. Marine is going viral after he discovered a Louis Vuitton Speedy handbag that had been sitting on the bottom of Lake Tahoe for more than 20 years during dive training.

According to online outlet Luxury Launches, the Marine found a monogram-canvas Louis Vuitton Speedy on the lake floor while training.

The bag, made in 1992, surprised observers by remaining remarkably well preserved despite spending decades in cold water.

Inside the 1990s-era Speedy, rescuers also found a diamond ring and a gold herringbone necklace.

The bag’s condition was surprisingly good: the brass zipper still worked, the monogram pattern retained its shape, and the leather tabs that attach the handles had softened but showed no obvious damage.

The Speedy’s longevity comes down to how Louis Vuitton builds it. Classic Speedy bags aren’t made entirely of leather; they use coated canvas. Craftspeople coat tightly woven cotton or linen with PVC or a similar synthetic and then print the monogram on top.

That process makes the bag lightweight, sturdy, and more water-resistant than natural leather.

The bag’s zipper and metal fittings are brass, which held up well in the wet environment. A natural patina formed on the metal, actually slowing corrosion.

Lake Tahoe’s unique conditions also helped preserve the bag. With a maximum depth of 501 meters (about 1,643 feet), the lake remains dark, cold, and nutrient-poor at depth, which slows bacterial activity to a crawl. Those frigid temperatures and lack of nutrients make it difficult for algae and other organisms to colonize sunken items, so the bag avoided decay and stayed intact.

The Marines train at Lake Tahoe specifically because of those extreme conditions. Sitting more than 1,990 meters (about 6,530 feet) above sea level and plunging to depths near 500 meters (about 1,640 feet), the lake is used for joint water-rescue and specialized diving training for military personnel and local rescue teams.

The glacier-cold alpine water provides ideal settings for cold-water diving, survival training, and rescue operations.

The Marine’s wife shared the discovery on Reddit. She wrote, “The bag kept its shape to some extent; you can gently clean the exterior with a soft cloth.” She added, “Thinking about how my husband found it, I plan to keep the bag. This is our first Louis Vuitton, so I wanted to share the story and ask for any advice.”

From the late 1980s into the early 1990s, Louis Vuitton’s Speedy 30 became a global luxury icon and one of the house’s bestsellers.

The craze kicked off when fashion icon Audrey Hepburn requested a smaller Speedy 25, and that association helped cement the bag’s timeless appeal.

Since its founding in 1854, Louis Vuitton’s monogram canvas has stood for craftsmanship and quality. Today, a classic monogram Speedy 30 carries a price tag of about $2,000 (about 2.67 million KRW).
