Get ready: regular flights between Incheon International Airport and Jeju International Airport are scheduled to resume in May.

They’re returning after nearly a decade off the schedule — service was suspended in October 2016.

South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced today (March 24) that it has approved Jeju Air’s application to operate the domestic Incheon–Jeju route.

Jeju Air will launch a twice-weekly roundtrip service starting May 12.

In May, flights will run on Tuesdays and Saturdays. From June onward, they’ll operate on Mondays and Fridays.

Jeju Air plans to use Boeing 737-800 or 737-8 aircraft on the route.

The ministry has been pushing to diversify routes connecting Incheon with regional airports as part of a plan to revitalize local air travel.

At the National Tourism Strategy meeting on Feb. 25, officials announced not only the Incheon–Jeju reopening but also plans to expand Incheon–Gimhae domestic transfer flights — services dedicated to international transfer passengers.

As part of that effort, Korean Air will increase its Incheon–Gimhae domestic transfer flights from 35 to 39 weekly, adding four flights starting next month.

The ministry also plans to improve transfer convenience at Incheon Airport for passengers connecting from international to domestic flights following the Incheon–Jeju route reopening.

Ju Jong-wan, director of the ministry’s aviation policy office, said, "We expect this route to make travel to Jeju more convenient for tourists. We will continue working to revitalize regional airports by expanding the domestic air network between Incheon and other local airports."
