Yeonggwang County is ramping up efforts to attract visitors during May’s Family Month. To boost overnight stays tied to local cultural events, the county is opening 3,000 additional spots for the May Yeonggwang Shimpyo Trip for one day only on the 14th — initial registration had closed in April.
This extra sign-up reflects growing demand for family getaways and spring outings. Applications open at 10 a.m. on the 14th via the official Yeonggwang Shimpyo Trip website.
Officials expect visitor numbers to rise after mid-May as a string of local events gets underway. The Sopjaengi National Gugak Competition runs May 16–17, and the Nanjangteugi event at the Beopseongpo Danoje festival is set for the 21st. With the Buddha’s Birthday holiday falling around the same time, tourism spending could spread throughout the local economy.
“May is a wonderful month for family travel,” a county official said, adding that the half-price Yeonggwang travel program is designed to let more people visit without breaking the bank and to deliver tangible benefits to the local economy.
Yeonggwang is home to standout attractions like Bulgapsa Temple, the Baeksu Coastal Road, Chilsan Tower, and Beopseongpo Gulbi Street. Paired with cultural highlights — including the Sopjaengi National Gugak Competition and Nanjangteugi, two of the four main events of the Beopseongpo Danoje festival — the area promises plenty of sights and hands-on experiences for families, couples, and groups of friends.
