Andong City is accelerating a tourism-hub project that links its historic downtown, Wolyeonggyo Bridge, and Andong Dam. The goal is simple: turn the area into a place where visitors want to linger.
With major projects moving into their final stages, the city is rapidly putting in the infrastructure needed to extend visitors' stays.
The initiative pairs waterfront spaces with after-dark programming to move beyond daytime-only tourism. Media facades, upgraded nightscapes, and water performances combine to position the Wolyeonggyo area as Andong’s new nighttime hotspot.
Tourist routes are getting a makeover too. A themed corridor connecting the historic downtown and Wolyeonggyo is emerging as a pedestrian-first tourism spine. The Seongnak Railway Bridge, repurposed from unused rail infrastructure, is being reborn as a fresh landmark. The Waryong Tunnel has been reinvented as an immersive, hands-on attraction, broadening what visitors can experience.
A planned trackless tram will serve as a key connector between the downtown, Wolyeonggyo, and Andong Dam, greatly improving access and ease of movement. As a circular route links the main sites, staying longer will feel more natural and convenient.
The project’s centerpiece—a ship-shaped floating performance venue—went into full production earlier this year. Combined with live media-art shows, it will turn the Wolyeonggyo area into a dramatic, multi-dimensional stage. When performances aren’t running, the structure will operate as an open waterside lounge where people can relax.
Meanwhile, the Water Culture Center at the Wolyeonggyo entrance has been reimagined as a tourism hub that pairs visitor services with a marketplace for local agricultural specialties. The city also plans to refine the waterfront nightscape around Wolyeonggyo, including installing luminarias at Yeongnakgyo, to showcase an even more polished night view.
An Andong City official said, \"Each project is already producing visible results, and the Wolyeonggyo area is rapidly transforming into a stay-focused destination. We will continue to raise the hub’s quality by coordinating content and programming going forward.\"
