[MyDaily = Shim Hye-jin] Not satisfied with Kim Hye-seong? The Los Angeles Dodgers pulled off a surprise trade.
The Dodgers announced on April 29 (KST) that they acquired Tyler Fitzgerald from the Toronto Blue Jays in a cash deal.
Fitzgerald began his professional career after the San Francisco Giants selected him in the fourth round, 116th overall, of the 2019 MLB Draft. He made his big-league debut in 2023.
He received limited opportunities as a rookie, but in 2024 he appeared in 96 games and posted a .334 batting average with 15 home runs, 34 RBIs and an .831 OPS.
Last year he briefly shared a clubhouse with Lee Jung-hoo, but the stint was short-lived. He slumped to a .217 average with 4 homers, 14 RBIs and a .605 OPS over 72 games, was removed from the 40-man roster before this season, designated for assignment and eventually moved to the Toronto Blue Jays.
He hasn’t reached the majors this season. In Triple-A he’s played nine games and is hitting just .094.
The Dodgers acquired Fitzgerald for cash.
Why bring him in? Versatility appears to be the draw. Fitzgerald can handle every infield position and cover left and right field as well.
True Blue LA noted that over the past three seasons Fitzgerald has primarily played shortstop and second base. He’s a true utility player who has also seen time at third base, first base and all three outfield spots. He currently has 1 year and 108 days of major-league service time and still has one minor-league opt-out remaining tied to his 2024 and 2025 options.
Fitzgerald’s arrival is likely to cut into Kim Hye-seong’s playing time, since Kim can also play both infield and outfield. With regulars like Mookie Betts, Tommy Edman and Kiké Hernández largely unavailable, the move looks aimed at shoring up the club’s depth.
