With the June 3 local elections approaching, Jeon Jae‑su, the Democratic Party of Korea’s candidate for Busan mayor, has stepped up visits to labor sites.
On May 1, International Workers’ Day, Jeon toured the Nopo Vehicle Depot of the Busan Transportation Corporation in Geumjeong District and held a meeting with on‑site workers.
Depot staff continued subway car maintenance during his visit, and Jeon also met with union representatives to hear their concerns.
Jeon posted on his social media: "Even on days when everyone else rests, there are workers who remain on site to protect citizens' safety."
He pledged to ensure that workplace problems are not stalled by bureaucratic hurdles, saying, "I will be a mayor whom people can visit and speak with anytime."
"I will build a Busan where working people are treated fairly and can feel real improvements in their lives through better jobs," he added.
In his Labor Day message, Jeon repeatedly emphasized respect for labor and the importance of direct communication with workers.
While visits to labor sites carry symbolic value, analysts say he still needs to lay out concrete policies to address the city's industrial and employment challenges.
