The CEN News / Reporter Lee Joo-sang | Gwangju City has increased the number of district council seats and redrawn electoral districts ahead of the nationwide local elections on June 3.
Gwangju City said it enacted and implemented the \"Ordinance on the Number of Members of District Councils in Gwangju Metropolitan City\" on April 30, raising the total number of district council seats from 69 to 73.
The city increased constituency seats from 60 to 63 and proportional representation seats from 9 to 10.
By district, Seo-gu rose from 13 to 14 seats, Nam-gu from 11 to 12, Buk-gu from 20 to 21, and Gwangsan-gu from 18 to 19; Dong-gu remains at seven seats.
By constituency, Seo-gu's Da constituency expanded from two to three members, and the Na constituencies in Nam-gu and Gwangsan-gu each grew from three to four members.
Gwangsan-gu's Ra constituency, which gained seats under the 2022 pilot of the multi-member district system, will remain at three members this time.
Buk-gu also renamed constituencies as part of the city's electoral-district adjustments: the former Ra, Ma and Ba constituencies were reorganized as Ba, Ra and Ma, respectively.
The change follows the redistricting plan prepared by the Gwangju District Council Electoral District Delimitation Committee, which accounted for population and the distribution of administrative dong under the amended Public Official Election Act. The city council approved the plan on April 24, finalizing the revisions.
Lee Soo-bin, director of the Autonomous Administration Division, said, \"We will work closely with the election commission and make every effort to ensure the June local elections proceed smoothly.\"
