The Hahoe Seonyu Rope-Fire Spectacle — a stunning traditional display that blends rope fires, Seonyu ritual flames, lotus bonfires, and falling sparks — kicks off its dazzling run with the first performance on May 2.
Hosted by Andong City and organized by the Korea Foundation for Spiritual Culture and the Hahoe Village Preservation Association, the city's signature nighttime attraction, 2026 Hahoe Seonyu Rope-Fire Spectacle – Hahoe Yeonhwa, will take place 10 times this year.
Staged from the Buyongdae cliff and Mansongjeong in the UNESCO World Heritage site Hahoe Village, the Seonyu rope-fire performance preserves the refined pastimes of Joseon-era scholars and promises a deeply atmospheric experience.
Expect a rope of fire stretching between Buyongdae and Mansongjeong, a waterfall-like cascade of falling sparks down the cliff, and the egg-fire that lights up the river — together these elements are poised to deliver a timeless, unforgettable thrill to the audience.
Before the main event, organizers have lined up a polished concert by the Andong City Choir and a dynamic Hahoe Byeolsingut mask-dance performance, along with other programs, giving visitors even more to see and enjoy.
Andong City will again require advance reservations this year to ensure a safe and comfortable viewing experience.
Visitors can book starting at 10:00 a.m. on April 13 through the Gyeongsangbuk-do integrated reservation platform Gyeongbuk Voyaji via the official website (www.gb-voyage.com) or the mobile app.
Tickets cost 10,000 KRW (approximately $7.50) per person (free for children under 24 months), roughly $7.50, and they sell out quickly each year when sales open, so heavy demand is expected again this season.
An Andong City official said, "Each year, many visitors to the World Heritage Hahoe Village find the Hahoe Seonyu Rope-Fire Spectacle especially moving. We will do our utmost in event planning and safety management so visitors can comfortably and orderly enjoy this traditional revelry through our advance-reservation system and disciplined operations."
