South Korea's Democratic Party mayoral candidate for Pyeongtaek, Choi Won-yong, visited Samsung Electronics' Pyeongtaek campus on the 24th to inspect semiconductor production facilities and explore measures to strengthen the industry's competitiveness.

At 10 a.m., Choi toured production lines alongside Gyeonggi gubernatorial candidate Chu Mi-ae of the Democratic Party, then participated in a roundtable discussion.

Present at the meeting were National Assembly members Hong Gi-won (Pyeongtaek-gap) and Kim Hyun-jung (Pyeongtaek-byeong), and Yongin mayoral candidate Hyun Geun-taek, all of whom reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate on advancing the \"Southern Gyeonggi Semiconductor Cluster.\"

The visit was arranged as Chu pledged to fast-track the semiconductor cluster and Choi outlined plans to develop Pyeongtaek as a national strategic city.

At the site, they highlighted the \"one team\" cooperation between Gyeonggi Province and Pyeongtaek City under the Democratic Party banner.

In the roundtable, Choi identified \"energy competitiveness\" as a core competitive factor for the semiconductor industry.

\"Semiconductors are a national strategic industry and a central determinant of Pyeongtaek's future,\" he said. \"Today, global competition hinges not only on production capacity but also on energy competitiveness, including compliance with RE100 targets.\"

He added, \"By expanding energy infrastructure in the western region and establishing a renewable-energy base, we will make Pyeongtaek a leading RE100 city.\"

Defining the election as a choice of leadership to turn AI-era changes into opportunities for Pyeongtaek, he said, \"Together with President Lee Jae-myung and candidate Chu Mi-ae, I will link the central government, Gyeonggi Province, and Pyeongtaek to maximize the semiconductor cluster's competitiveness.\"

Political observers note that Choi has emphasized his prior experience as head of the Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Development Support Team, where he played a key role in attracting Samsung's Pyeongtaek plant and the Godeok International New Town—an experience he presents as an asset.

Chu also said, \"The semiconductor cluster across Gyeonggi Province, including Pyeongtaek, is a core pillar of national competitiveness. We will strengthen the semiconductor ecosystem through swift implementation and institutional support.\"

Choi also outlined major pledges, including developing a K-semiconductor hub, reconfiguring the advanced-industry ecosystem, linking educational infrastructure, and creating a city where essential services are reachable within 30 minutes.

\"Based on my administrative experience, I will deliver results that make residents proud,\" he said.

After the site visit, Choi expressed his determination to win the election: \"With the same resolve I used to attract Samsung, I will complete Pyeongtaek as a world-class advanced smart city and a green, energy self-sufficient city.\"
