Today the Democratic Party held an on-site Supreme Council meeting in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, where it rallied behind Choo Mi-ae, its candidate for Gyeonggi governor, and Kim Bo-ra, its candidate for Anseong mayor. Leader Jeong praised Choo as a politician who has defended democracy with principle and conviction and needs no further introduction. The party plans to finalize and announce strategic nominations for the remaining 12 parliamentary by-election seats this week. Blue House Senior Presidential Secretary Ha Jung-woo and spokesperson Jeon Eun-su are expected to resign this week to run in the by-elections. Yesterday, Leader Jeong spent about two hours having dinner with Secretary Ha and reportedly urged him to run; Jeong said Ha’s decision is imminent. Here is his comment: 「Jeong Cheong-rae / Leader, Democratic Party」 He said he would go home to think it over. I suspect he reached a final decision overnight. I hope we’ll have good news to share… If Secretary Ha runs in Busan’s Buk-gu A district, it could become a three-way race with former People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon and former Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Park Min-sik. Nominations in Gyeonggi are also drawing intense interest. Supporters of former Democratic Research Institute Deputy Director Kim Yong say about 60 pro-Lee faction lawmakers have expressed support for his nomination and are pressing Leader Jeong on the issue. Democratic Party chief spokesperson Kang Joon-hyun acknowledged that various discussions are underway and asked people to trust the party’s judgment. Here is his comment: 「Jang Dong-hyuk / Leader, People Power Party」 If Kim Yong speaks, it won’t result in charges being dropped; instead, Lee Jae-myung’s trial would have to resume immediately. Kim Yong is using silence as leverage to intimidate the nomination process. International organizations keep warning of an economic crisis, yet the government and the Blue House dismiss those warnings as exaggerated and mislead the public. The president spends his time on social media, stoking fear about housing and dividing the public. The People Power Party will decide this afternoon whether incumbent North Chungcheong Governor Kim Young-hwan or attorney Yoon Gap-geun will be its candidate for Chungbuk governor. If parties confirm their candidates for Gyeonggi governor over the weekend, the major-party lineups for the gubernatorial races in the local elections will be set. Meanwhile, Seoul mayoral campaigns are stepping up efforts to court voters concerned about real estate. Oh Se-hoon, who registered today as a People Power Party mayoral primary candidate, met citizens at Cheonggyecheon and then attended a Gangnam rally.
