“You can't turn something that didn't happen into fact, no matter how hard you try”

Kim Kim Kyung-il, the mayor of Paju in Gyeonggi Province, flatly rejected allegations that someone else paid for his phone purchase, calling them “absurd.”

On the 17th, Kim posted on his social media account that “I paid for my phone in full, including the trade‑in credit and cash,” and added that “the person who sold the phone confirmed receiving payment directly.” He attached a signed fact‑checking statement and denied the claims outright.

The controversy began after a citizen filed a complaint on the 3rd of last month, accusing Kim of pressuring an individual identified as A to intervene in a project and alleging that A covered the phone purchase as a form of payback, in violation of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act. Authorities, however, say the company A reportedly sought to influence did not participate in the relevant project.

Statement Kim said the person he had considered a close friend appeared hurt when he refused the request, but called the accusations “preposterous.” He warned, “As the party primary approaches its final stage, don’t be swayed by false reports or rumor‑mongering. No matter what you do, you can’t make something false into truth.”

Police said they plan to summon Mayor Kim for questioning after completing their interview with A and reviewing the related documents.
